Outfits Inspired by Children’s Book Covers

I love books, and I love a good book cover! Yes, we’re not supposed to judge by them, but anyway. For this post, I picked out some of my son’s favorite books to inspire some outfits. More thoughts on that throughout and at the end of the post. Enjoy!

Green Eggs and Ham

by Dr. Seuss

A classic for a reason! I love the rhymes, the message, and the color scheme.

I would wear this in a house, with a mouse, in a box, or with a fox! In fact, I’ve worn almost this exact outfit before. I just love these colors together! Maybe I’ve been subconsciously influenced by this cover since childhood?

The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks

by Katherine Paterson, illustrated by Leo & Diane Dillon

This book is so sweet and so beautiful. It’s about being kind to animals and the people around you. I love the illustrations and the message.

At first glance, the cover looks very neutral, but the colors are just subtly vibrant (is that an oxymoron?), and tone well together. I thought this scarf matched perfectly, as do the solids.

Nefertiti, the Spidernaut: The Jumping Spider Who Learned to Hunt in Space

by Darcy Pattinson, illustrated by Valeria Tisnes

I get emotional every time I read this book. It is incredible! I love the information about spiders, habits, and space.

I have either worn this exact outfit, or one incredibly like it, maybe just different shoes. It goes with the cover so perfectly! I even wore little spider earrings.

The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree

by Stan and Jan Berenstain

This Berenstain Bears story is a favorite from my childhood. I memorized it so that I could “read” it. My son loves it too!

This is another where even I’m like, “okay, how did I have this already?” This top, which my mom gave me from her closet years ago, and I’m pretty sure she bought in 2013, matches perfectly with the colors in this cover. It’s eerie! My blue and green ?! earrings seemed to go with the spooky theme too.

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site

by Sherri Duskey Rinker, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld

A sweet board book that is truly soporific and therefore great for bedtime reading. My son has and loves many of the other books in this series, but for this post, I had to go back to the beginning! Fun fact: my son was a late talker, but one of his early phrases was calling all construction vehicles “goodnight goodnights” because of this book.

It was so easy to know what to wear for this color scheme! I wore the scarf and star stud earrings to represent the stars in the night sky. The tan shoes are for the dirt at the construction site.

Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes

by Eva Chen, illustrated by Derek Desierto

Juno Valentine is a spunky girl on an adventure involving shoes of significant women in history. History and shoes in one adorable book? I’m there! My son loves it too! It speaks to me about the importance of wearing shoes that suit what you’re doing, but also suit your personality.

It’s too bad these pants always photograph more red! Oh well, won’t stop me from wearing them for the pinky-purple they really are. I couldn’t resist getting out some of my favorite funky shoes to have in the background! The flash photo shows off why I picked that particular necklace.

I can’t believe how well these turned out! I am so pleased and excited. Can you believe that these were all styled from clothes in my closet, and I didn’t have to buy anything specifically for this post? And some of these looks are almost the exact same as outfits I’ve already worn! Incredible. And I didn’t even intend for there to be a rainbow! Man I’m good.

I want to find more cover-inspiration for a future post. Do you have any ideas or requests? Genre or color? Or just book suggestions?
