Summer 2021 Intro

The hot weather and feelings of freedom that come with summer feel different this year, and that is reflected in the trends of the season! We’re going out more, and dressing up from head to toe, instead of just from neck to low shoulder, or whatever else is visible on a video call. I know that I, for one, want to dress up and enjoy my clothes even more than usual. Every day is an occasion worth dressing up for!

Trends

Three Piece Swim

A bikini (or other swim outfit) with a matching shirt over it. Some brands are selling the three pieces together, but this is one that would be easy to follow just with what’s in your closet. In fact, it’s how I prefer to dress for beach and pool days because I burn like a lobster.

Statement Dresses

Not many outfits can make as much of a statement as easily as a gorgeous dress does. Target’s recent collection reflects this, as do a lot of dresses that I’ve seen at Net-A-Porter and other retailers.

Strappy Sandals

Flat or heeled, sandals with different styles of thin straps and wraps are everywhere. They have a classic look, and are a lovely counter to busy dresses.

Smocking

This fabric technique is everywhere. In waist bands, the backs of tops, the tops of dresses, parts of sleeves, and so on. Because it makes the fabric stretchy, it’s a good way to have one piece fit a variety of sizes. I’ve seen a lot of blouses, especially, with partly or fully smocked bodices, and then billowy sleeves.

‘90s and ‘00s

This encompasses a lot of styles, but wow, do I notice a lot of influence from those decades in particular. Square toed shoes, the strappy sandals, the smocking, slip dresses, some of the color schemes and shapes, etc. They give me flashbacks.

My Summer Shopping List

  • Blue denim jacket: I have my eye on a few Pilcro jackets on Poshmark!

  • Printed shorts: I’m waiting for the right print and shape to catch my eye! I’m also thinking about fun bright colored shorts too.

  • Casual/fun wrap dress: even though I haven’t bought a wrap dress, I did recently pick up a bunch of fun dresses, so I’m probably set. If I see the perfect wrap dress (great shape, great fabric, great print), I’d give it a try.

  • White jeans: it feels like these are forever and always on my list! I need to find a good curvy fit. Madewell has some new options that I’m going to try this month, so maybe I’ll post a little try-on review.

  • Camisoles: yellow would be a fun addition to my cami collection!

  • Breathable tees: really, just comfortable tops in basic and/or fun colors with shoulder coverage. I am so drawn to prints, but need more solids to coordinate.

  • Chambray shirt: I had one years ago that I loved to wear as a shirt or a topper, and I wore through it. I definitely need to replace it.

  • Sandals: many of my favorites are starting to wear out, so I’m looking for replacements. I am tempted to try a pair with more straps because they can look so cute!
