Style Challenge: Quarantine Edition

Last week, I pulled from my outfit archives (now there’s a fun category) for outfit inspiration and tips to stay stylish and cozy. This week, I want to talk about a different kind of style challenge for your time at home (or, if you’re reading in the future, any time you want to do this I guess?), especially if you’re already planning on going through your closet.

Each image gallery has a little theme. The first is the statement skirt. The second is the repetition of the sweaters, the scarves, the bottoms. The third shows bright sweaters different ways (with one random image with the floral pants because I wanted to include that look), and grey pants. The fourth is a sweater and then trench coats, with some overlap.

If there are pieces you like, but aren’t sure how to wear:

  • Look online to see how similar pieces are styled, and if those inspire you at all.

  • Try wearing different combinations to see what ends up feeling right. Go outside of the box and you might find something fun!

If there are pieces you’re on the fence about getting rid of:

  • See how many outfits you can make with them, and how much you like those options.

    • A versatile piece can be handy, but only if you like the looks. You can only hold on to so many one hit wonders.

    • If it doesn’t go with much and you’re not feeling those outfits, it’s not worth keeping.

  • Wear them around and see how they feel throughout the day.

    • If you can’t wait to get them off, that’s a bad sign.

    • If you don’t notice them or like them, they’re keepers!

What to do with clothes you don’t want:

  • Friends: give them away or have a swap party (when it’s safe to do so - you could send out feelers for now to find those new homes).

  • Sell: online or in-store consignment (again, when it’s safe).

    • fold and keep away from your closet while you wait to sell

  • Donate: bag items (for when it’s safe to drop off).

Since you have time at home where you aren’t being witnessed by the usual suspects, there’s no risk of judgment, and you can change as often as you want. Even if you aren’t trying pieces for closet organizing purposes, it might be fun to have your own fashion show of pieces you love, but don’t get much occasion to wear. Why not!
