Spring 2020 Closet Update

It’s the time of year that I put away my dead-of-winter clothes, and bring back lighter, brighter favorites from the previous year.

Putting away part of your closet makes it easier to shop your stash when the next season rolls around. If you get excited about it again, bring it back out. If you don’t, it doesn’t have to stay, period.

What I put into storage:

It feels funny to have pieces that I love and could wear and take them out of rotation, but you have to admit what you are sartorially tired of and want to get away from as the weather warms

  • My heaviest sweaters and scarves:

    • I’m still wearing sweaters because it’s still chilly and now I won’t have to layer them with coats, but certain sweaters that are very dark and very heavy don’t feel as necessary right now. I’m ready to move on from them. (Tip: the storage bins I use aren’t air-tight, so I place wool sweaters in ziplock bags to keep them safe from bugs.)

    • Most of my scarves are appropriate for three or four seasons, and some just the coldest weather. Even when we have the last of the blustery weather, I can perfectly make do with one of my mid-weight scarves.

  • Dark blouses, skirts, and dresses:

    • I don’t put too many blouses away because a lot of them stay out year-round (though I may be changing that practice), but most of the darker ones go into storage come spring.

    • My leather skirts are still accessible so I can go that route if I want to, but the thicker pieces or autumnal toned skirts are folded and stored.

    • My darker and more formal cocktail dresses get tucked away in favor of sundresses that can be dressed up or down.

What stays for now:

April and May are finicky, so not everything meant for cold weather gets the bin (storage, not trash) just yet.

  • Coats: It hurts to say this, but my coats are still easily accessible. While it was in the 70s today and beautiful, spring weather can quickly turn cold and wet, so I keep my puffers available until the weather stays at least warm and wet.

  • Boots: Tall boots and booties are fun to wear with skirts and dresses without having to worry about bare legs freezing. They won’t be out much longer, but I’ll continue to enjoy them while it lasts.

  • Beret: It’s just so chic and helps my head look cute on windy days. Soon it’ll be too warm, and I might not wear it at all in the next month, but I won’t put it away just yet.

What I brought out of storage:

My hottest weather clothes haven’t emerged yet, but the lighter and layer-friendly pieces have. Also I didn’t have to bring out my jean jackets because they never left.

  • Bright dresses, skirts, and pants:

    • I rediscovered a few of my favorite dresses in storage. I won’t describe them too much, but plan on wearing them soon.

    • Because I wear skirts the least in winter, I have many that come back into rotation starting in spring. Exhibit A: the knit pencil skirt I wore in Monday’s OotW.

    • My palazzo and harem pants are back in the closet. I don’t like them with heavy sweaters or coats so they don’t stay out in the winter, but they work well with jackets for spring or just a top in summer.

  • Sandals: I am the kind of person that will bare my ankles and toes as long as I don’t get frostbite, so I get back into open sandals very early. My low-heel ankle strap sandals get a lot of wear, so they’ll be back in rotation in short order.

What’s new:

I haven’t added to my wardrobe too much as of late, but a few pieces have made it in.

  • White Keds: They’re here and I love them. I haven’t worn them yet because it’s only been a couple days, but I definitely will. It’s hard to resist the urge to keep them pristine, but shoes are meant to be worn and enjoyed. I might do a post featuring them versus other shoes, and how footwear switches up a look.

  • Floral Keds: Another pair? Yes. The color scheme is pink/blue/green (which are some of my favorite colors and combinations), with white and gold accents. They’re very cute, fit, and bring me joy to look at and wear.

  • Possibly a slip dress?: This just arrived and needs to be evaluated. I like the idea of it, but I can’t tell yet if the color and the fit really work to me, and those are both important. I will probably do a style session with it in the next day or so, and maybe feature it in a future post where I go through some potential outfits and then say whether it stays or goes.
