Storing Winter Pieces

It’s getting steadily warmer on the east coast, which means it’s finally time to put away our winter clothes! Here are some tips to help you with the process.

Check back Friday for links to many different storage container options!

And if this seems like a lot to do on your own, consider scheduling Your Wardrobe Therapy appointment!

Make sure clothes are clean first

Check for stains and smells before you store. If left on your garments, they will only get worse over the next 3-6 months.

Wash laundry, spot clean, or do a dry cleaning run ahead of time.

Shoe bags

Shoes get very dirty! Wipe down the tops as necessary with a cloth, shake out the soles of the really dirty pairs, and bag them. This will protect anything stored near the soles from getting dirty while in storage.

Can be plastic bags, can be fabric, can be something else!

Once bagged, shoes could be stored in bins or even a big bag. Whatever works for you.

Bins

Many different options depending on your setup! Don’t forget to double check the dimensions. Pictures help you see the way the bin looks, but quart size means nothing to me compared to actually measuring out the bin.

  • Under the bed: easy to access while being out of the way; some versions have wheels!

  • Small bins: good for stacking, and keeping like items together

  • Large bins: for bigger pieces (like chunky sweaters) or spaces that are easy access and/or low (maybe a garage)

  • Air/water tight: a secondary feature of your bins to consider especially if in potentially damp place like basement or garage (before editing, that said garbage; please do not store your clothes in the garbage)

Vacuum bags

Great for sweaters, coats, and other such large items. Or anything, really, but I find it makes the most difference with those types. Can be put in bins to keep pieces extra safe and stackable, or tucked away on the top of a closet or something.

Some vacuum bags are done by hand or with a vacuum cleaner attachment, and come in a wide range of sizes.
