Halloween Costume Ideas (that might be in your closet already!)

It’s October, which means spooky season, candy, and costumes! Today I have costume ideas that would work for an individual or a group, and even some that would be appropriate for an office while still feeling dressed up.

Now on to the costumes!

Jungle Cruise

Linen, khakis, boots, maybe a neck scarf! Neutrals and brights (especially jewel tones like emerald!) both acceptable. A good option if it happens to be a warm Halloween where you are! Similar: Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, The Mummy, any explorer/adventurer type!

Anchorman

Follow a specific costume from your favorite anchor-person, OR make up your own! Wear a (pant or skirt) suit, matching or mixed, wear a turtleneck or blouse, consider accessories (like a scarf or sunglasses), and do some big hair! The human torch was denied a bank loan.

Hobbit

Blouse, belt (or corset slash stays), floaty midi skirt (add petticoats for more fluff), and an apron. Bonus points for a flower crown and going barefoot.

Witch

‘90s witch, scary witch, forest witch, any witch! There are so many fun options that you could go with based on what you already have. You could add a (stuffed) animal familiar, or a broom, or a basket with foraged spell ingredients.

Flowers

Look up your favorites, and see my flower posts for more inspiration! Would work especially well as a costume that isn’t too costume-y, depending on your preferences and work dress code. Would make a cute group costume as a “bouquet” or “garden”. Consider having a reference photo or a plant identifier to show off!

From the Blog Archives

Last year’s Halloween post: There are 15 costumes in that post!

Star Wars post: There are dozens of characters to be inspired by, or you could be a Jedi (tan robes), or a Sith (black with red accents), or a droid (metals), or rebel scum (see post! Similar to adventurer above).

Flower posts (one, two): As I mentioned above, I think flowers make for fun costume inspiration! And the costumes can be very subtle or very pronounced, depending on your preference.

Schitt’s Creek: A great show with a cast of characters that have incredible sartorial variety.
