My Coat Collection

Winter is technically over a month away, but the weather this month has me breaking out my coats sooner than ever. Without further ado, here are the coats in my closet!

Black long puffer coat, The North Face, fall 2008

  • Added to my closet when I started attending Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where it gets quite cold and often snowy.

  • While I don’t love this coat for its aesthetic quality, it has served me incredibly well in the decade plus since.

  • I definitely recommend investing in a solid winter coat, and would further recommend getting one that fits a little large. I can wear this one over any chunky sweater or jacket!

Sheep coat, Swildens, fall 2012

  • This coat is an incredible souvenir from a trip to Paris with my parents.

  • I don’t wear it very often because it is a lot (which is saying something, coming from me), and I don’t want to damage it. But when I do wear it, wow.

  • It is cozy and gorgeous, and looks great with dressy or casual outfits.

Yellow peacoat, J. Crew, fall 2015

  • I’d loved peacoats since I had a kid and had a purple one. When I saw this yellow one from J. Crew, I was immediately enamored.

  • It’s warm but not hot, and looks great with almost everything. Plus it has lots of pockets, including interior pockets.

  • It brings me joy every time I wear it because yellow makes me happy, and it is just make other people feel similarly because it is my most complimented coat.

Silver short puffer, Target, fall 2017

  • I love metallic accents, and picked this coat up on a whim. It’s not the warmest, but it works well for chilly weather.

  • One of the first times I wore it was picking my son up from preschool, and it was a big hit with the two year olds.

Floral coat, Target, fall 2021

  • This is from the Target Fall Designer collection, and I really enjoy it.

  • Like the silver puffer, it isn’t that warm, but it’s a nice little layer.

  • The colors are so nice, I enjoy it whenever I wear it.

  • I happen to have a pink belt that goes perfectly with it, if I ever felt like dressing it up.

Ivory long puffer coat, Gap, fall 2021

  • Last winter, I had a light neutral colored puffer on my shopping list, but I just couldn’t find the right thing. A couple months ago, I found this at Gap and thought, wow this is exactly what I was looking for!

  • I’ve already worn it many times.

Vintage fur coat, vintage

  • I don’t remember the exact summer I found this baby, but I think it was 2009 or 2010. I also can’t remember if I found it in the shop or my dad did, but we thought it was incredible (and my mom was horrified).

  • It’s quite heavy and warm, and sometimes my husband steals it. Talk about a conversation piece.

Ski puffer, vintage

  • ‘70s from my mom!

  • My granddad bought this for my mom (I think because it was a great ski brand, and he found it on sale), and then it made its way to me.

  • It is so unusual and the colors are weird. In a way, it’s rather ugly. But I love it and always have!

Velvet coat, vintage

  • Another true vintage piece, this coat belonged to my great-grandma.

  • The velvet is unbelievably soft. It is truly unlike any other velvet. The lining is a bit loose at the hem, but other than that, the condition is incredible.

  • It’s another piece I almost never wear, mostly to preserve it but also because it’s not often appropriate.

  • Even so, it’s incredibly special to have and I adore it.

When I told my husband about this post, he said I needed to have 10 coats to call it a collection. Therefore, I’ll take that to mean I need to get another coat! I’m thinking a camel coat, or maybe something velvety and bright. Who knows, maybe I’ll even find another coat this season!
