How to Begin Building Your Capsule Wardrobe

Capsules are a handy way to organize your closet. They make it easier to shop smarter, which saves you time and money. A good capsule also saves you time getting dressed. It’s the best! But it can be hard to know where to start, especially as it is a time investment in the beginning. Here are my suggestions for setting up your own capsule!

Record your outfits for as long as possible (at least a few weeks).

  • Your photos don’t have to be fancy - you’re not trying to impress anyone, just make a record of your style!

  • You can also write down the pieces you wear (to differentiate between different items of similar kind).

  • Make an extra note if any pieces are definitely winners (LOVE) or losers (why is this still in your closet?), and star any outfits you particularly like or dislike (to analyze later).

Look for patterns

  • What (pieces, styles, colors, outfits) are your favorites?

  • What pieces are your basics? (They’re the ones that you wear most often.)

  • What colors pop up most frequently? (They’re part of the parameters for your capsule.)

Identifying your favorite pieces and styles, and what your favorite outfits have in common, will help you figure out what your capsule is missing and how best to fill the gaps. Repeat the process for different seasons (to account for different weather, temperatures, and other varying needs). Your closet can have for capsules for different occasions (work, casual, hobby, etc).

If a capsule sounds appealing but daunting, contact me! I would love to analyze your sartorial data, and help make your life easier.
