Winter 21/22 Intro

After a hot summer and mostly mild autumn, winter is hitting the mid-atlantic with a vengeance. It’s not technically winter yet, but it definitely feels like it. I’m getting ready to reassess my closet for a cold weather tune up, and reading about seasonal trends.

Trends

Statement Coats

Add interest to your winter necessity - a coat - with color and/or print!

I love this idea because it’s so fun. I have a bright coat and a print coat (as discussed here), but I’d add something really wild if it struck my fancy.

Leggings

We want to keep the comfort we found in quarantine, but elevate it a bit. Leggings with a bit less athleticism, and a bit more detail, while still being stretchy and flattering.

I’ve found new favorites at Zara!

Bright Color … Combos

Not just one bright, or a bright paired with a neutral, but bright on bright. This isn’t a new idea, but I’m here for it.

I’ll play around with fun combinations in a followup winter trend post! Stay tuned.

The Usual Suspects

Velvet, sparkle, leather, sweaters, fur. I don’t think of these as trends because they’re classics, especially this season. In addition, there are a lot of ‘90s and ‘00s throwbacks continuing to make the rounds.

I’m on the lookout for velvet to add to my closet, and I wouldn’t say no to the right sparkle.

Trends they’re trying to make happen…

Low rises, pants under dresses/skirts.

Can these be worn in a way that looks good? Yes, but it isn’t as easy or accessible or comfortable. It’s a no from me!

What am I going to wear?

I’ve kinda done this before, but I wanted to give myself some ideas and challenges for the next three months. I get the most sartorially stunted in very hot and very cold weather, so I want there to be some inspiration.

I want to wear skirts and dresses at least once a week on average.

Maybe I should have a sweater challenge where I can’t repeat a sweater until I’ve worn all of them? That might be too difficult. But basically, wear more of my sweaters, not just the same few all the time. Expand the rotation.

Of the above trends, I want to try the bright color combinations and wearing leggings in more elevated looks. I sense two future posts!

Last Winter’s Shopping List

What I got

Light/neutral puffer and vest: My off-white puffer coat from the Gap is my new favorite piece, what an absolute win. Still undecided about what color vest would be best. (Probably ivory.)

Wool socks: Just got some new socks, and they’re great. Will feature in a review in January or February!

Winter boots: I got a pair from Native (and a matching pair for my son), and they’ve worked out well!

What I need

Berets and cloches: Since it is freezing already, I think I’ll find more hats for staying warm.

Tights: I have just ordered some tights from Sheertex from their Black Friday sale, so we’ll see if they live up to their hype and price tag!

Black ankle boots: Needs to be over the ankle, toe on the pointy side, low/flat heel.

Sweaters: Very selectively looking for sweaters. I’d love to find the right green, and surprisingly, I need a better black sweater.

Velvet skirt: In a throwback to my own late ‘90s/early ‘00s closet, I’m on the lookout for a velvet midi or maxi skirt, preferably in a print, but the right solid color would work also.
