Packing Tips: Cold Weather

While the standard holiday migrations might not happen this year, there could be some. There will definitely be more travel opportunities in the future, so bookmark this post if you find it helpful!

The primary clothing rule for cold weather is layering, and that also applies when traveling. I suggested starting from the base of your outfit and layering from there. When packing for a cold weather trip, however, I recommend the opposite.

First, check the weather! This applies to all trips, but knowing just how cold it could get at your destination, as well as whether or not to expect snow or rain, will help you decide which layers are the best for your trip.

Then select the bulkier pieces and versatile layers (especially coats and shoes) that travel well, are comfortable, and will keep you warm.

Plan your outfits to go with them. The key is to rewear the outer layers and shoe choices as much as possible.

Consider packing bulky pieces in ziplock bags so you can press the air out and save some space. Bonus points for doing that within your packing cubes!

If you have any occasions, events, or other specific plans during your trip that might require an appropriate outfit, prep your looks ahead of time, and make sure that they’re warm and can work with your layers.

On travel days, wear your heaviest layers: coat, jacket, sweater, shoes, scarf. That way you don’t have to fit them into your bags.

If you travel at all this winter, I’d love to know if you found any of these tips helpful, or if you have any for me!
