Intro to Fall 2020

It might still be warm in Delaware, but that’ll be changing soon. I’ll admit, I love fall. Layers are more fun to style, I like to feel warm in crisp weather, the colors are glorious, and Halloween is my favorite holiday. It’s when I got married. I love every season for different reasons, but I think fall might edge out in the top spot for me. I don’t mean to hurry summer away as I’ll be missing it dreadfully in a few months, but bring on fall!

Fall Trends

  • Tie Dye

    • This DIY-y look continues to dominate. It’s usually shown in casual clothes, like coordinating sweatsuits, but I’ve seen it in blouses and skirts too. Every color combination exists somewhere, if you look hard enough.

    • This trend doesn’t appeal to me very much, but the right color combinations look vibrant rather than campy. I’d go for a great neon mix, or heavily saturated pieces.

  • Plaid

    • Plaid comes back like clockwork. Different kinds of plaid might be more trendy than others in a particular fall/winter, but it’s always somewhere. It looks warm, but doesn’t have to be heavy.

    • Recently I’ve seen a lot of very colorful or very neutral, and a lot of specifically madras plaid.

  • Textures

    • Different textures are popular in different seasons, but for fall and winter, it’s all about those chunky and warm textures. Knits, wool and cashmere, even woven/raffia accessories.

    • Sweaters with very obvious weaves are big (in more than just popularity), as are wool and cashmere layers, particularly in brights.

  • Sage!!

    • This color has been popping up everywhere I look. Stores I browse (online). Influencers I follow (especially Lydia Millen). Interiors (sage kitchens galore). We’re thinking of getting our siding redone in, you guessed it, sage! (It’ll look great with our forsythia-yellow doors.)

    • Usually olive is more popular in fall, but sage is like its cool-toned cousin and I admit that I love it. It works well with many colors. Also, a color trend is easy to try if it appeals to you, because you can go for any article of clothing or accessory, and see how it feels.

Shopping List

Let me be very honest, I have a lot of clothes. I don’t need more clothes. I always want more clothes (I’m too good at visualizing potential outfits, it’s a curse), but I don’t need more. However, I do need to invest in few basics to help me get the most wear out of the clothing I have.

  • Numi

    • One of the problems I have with the sweaters I love is that I don’t want to wash them constantly, but they’re so warm that I get sweaty and so do they!

    • I read about these undershirts towards the end of last winter, and I think I need to give them a try. They’re pricy, but if they prolong the life of my favorite sweaters, it’s worth the investment.

  • Tights

    • I haven’t bought new tights in quite a few years, and the pairs I have are fairly pilled, worn, and aren’t that comfortable. Technology in this arena has significantly improved, so I want to get some new pairs so I can go back to wearing black tights all the time, or sheer tights when it’s too cold to wear just bare legs.

    • I’ve looked a lot at Heist (particularly The Nude, The Eighty, and The Fishnet) and Sheertex (particularly the Nude Classic Sheer Tights and the Classic Semi-Opaque Tights). Not going to lie, it feels crazy to consider spending that much on tights. But if they are significantly more comfortable than my current cheap pairs, and look better, and last better, it’s worth it.

  • Cropped black jacket

    • It surprises even me that I don’t have a basic cropped black jacket. But I don’t!

    • Between the cropped blazers and trucker jacket, Aritzia has my number. Right now, I’m leaning the most towards the one-button cropped blazer.

Upcoming

I started planning out the next several months of blog posts, and I’m trying to decide what direction I want to go on.

I enjoy styling posts, and they definitely take the most time because I usually assign myself many costume changes. Truly, I have so many ideas for different formulas, capsules, tips, themes and inspirations, it almost makes my head explode to try to decide what to do first. If you have any questions, ideas, or requests, let me know via a comment below or email (mary@yourwardrobetherapy.com)!

I’m thinking of switching around my Friday posts so there are Finds from both specific shops and general categories, Features of some of my favorite brands and pieces, and Follows where I talk about some of the content creators I find particularly inspiring and engaging.
