Cold Weather Tips

In a word: layers.

In more than one word: a variety of the right layers to warm without sacrificing style.

  • Tanks and camis:

    • knit or silky, any additional insulation for the torso is helpful

    • great way to make a cozy sweater feel even cozier

    • plus, if somehow too warm, you can safely remove your top layers

  • Cashmere sweaters and wool socks

    • two freezing weather-friendly materials that are also relatively light

    • cashmere sweaters are usually thin, which makes them great for layering over light blouses (or camisoles - see above) and/or wearing with a jacket (possibly under a puffer)

    • wool socks help keep tootsies super warm without them getting sweaty (which would make them colder)

  • Roomy puffer coat:

    • good on its own as a warm and weather-proof topper, but bonus points if you can comfortably wear it over a thick sweater or a jacket layer

  • Scarves

    • scarves are a great way to add interest (color and print) to an outfit, plus warmth!

    • silk scarves are surprisingly warm for how light they are, usually look dressier, and transition well to warmer weather, which should give them longer life in your closet

  • Hats

    • any layer on the head (or ears - earmuffs!) helps keep everything else warm

    • berets are often made of wool and look chic

    • beanies and bobble hats are more casual, still warm, and can be quite cute

  • Footwear

    • over-the-knee boots (with wool socks!) are a great way to add more coverage for the legs while smoothing the silhouette

    • tights under dresses or skirts (or even pants!), with boots and socks, sometimes even lined with fleece

I wore this outfit on a day where the high was 35, and I was quite warm! I can’t say I’d specifically recommend wearing peep-toe booties, but it definitely would’ve been worse without the tights. More information about this outfit will be in a future post.

What’s your go-to way to stay cozy in winter? Were any of these new or inspiring for you? Stay warm!
