Shopping Tips: Returns
A significant component of shopping online is dealing with the pieces that don’t work out, also known as returns. If you think you’re not good at returns, you’re not alone! A lot of people forget to handle theirs, and are stuck with items they don’t want. I am the queen of returns. It’s a self-proclaimed title, but acknowledged by more than just me!
The most important step is to be prepared for the possibility of making a return when you’re placing the order. By which I mean: know the process.
What’s the retailer’s specific return window?
Can you return to a physical store? If so, is there one convenient for you?
If you’re mailing back the return, does it cost extra (deducted from your return or paid separately by you)?
Some retailers offer free returns, but only for members of their rewards program.
Do they specify if the return is via USPS, or a different carrier?
Know if there is one that is significantly more or less convenient for you.
Preemptively plan which you’ll do: “I’ll stop by the mall after work,” “I’ll drop it off at the post office when I run other errands,” “I can schedule a free pickup.”*
*I’ve never done this, but some carriers have it as an option!
Once you’ve decided to return, package it ASAP, and add the drop off to your schedule (part of errands, go to the store, whatever).
Handy materials for packing up returns: packing tape, packing slips, and shipping bags (in case the original packaging isn’t usable).
Packing tape is the most helpful. I use the slips and bags for shipping poshmark sales as well!
If you can’t return immediately, set a reminder about the return window.
On your phone, calendar, planner, sticky note on your monitor, where ever works for you that you won’t forget it! Multiple places, even.
You can write down either the last day, or a day that keeps you well within the return window.
I hope this helps you improve your returns experience! Are there any other issues you have with returns? Let me know your questions, or your tips!
